The Great War Videos boxed Set

Own your piece of history. A landmark production in British television history, unseen for almost forty years.

In the early 1960s the BBC embarked on one of their most important and ambitious series ever. It was to be the definitive history of the First World War, complete in twenty-six 40-minute episodes.

So successful were the BBC that they created one of the most highly acclaimed television documentary series ever - and an inspired account of the world-shattering events of 1914-1918 that remains totally unequalled to this day.

The Great War is narrated by Sir Michael Redgrave, one of the most highly regarded actors of the time, and employs the voice skills of many other leading actors of the day including Sir Ralph Richardson (as Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig) and Marius Goring.

To tell its story, the series includes authentic archive footage and stunning photographic images gathered from 37 separate sources around the world. It also features interviews with many veterans of the war (by this time most were still only in their 60s), as well as almost 150 separate extracts from diaries, letters and reports from the war. The historical consultant and main writer of the series was John Terraine, probably the most admired historian of his time. Hugely successful and critically acclaimed around the world, The Great War's style, content and high production values was later to inspire Jeremy Isaacs to create The World At War. Now, this important series has been made available on video for the very first time, complete and unabridged.

The winter of 1916-17 saw Chemin Des Dames, Vimy Ridge and a widespread mutiny amongst French forces, while America declared war. The video concludes with the offensive at Ypres in 1917.

      • The Great War Videos Volume Four: Only War, Nothing But War

1917 saw the Russian Revolution and the collapse of opposition to the Germans in the East.
