To tell its story, the series includes authentic archive footage and stunning photographic images gathered from 37 separate sources around the world. The historical consultant and main writer of the series was John Terraine, probably the most admired historian of his time.   Featuring the first SIX full-length episodes from the series, this volume looks at the first year of the war from the causes of the conflict up to Christmas 1914. The winter of 1916-17 saw Chemin Des Dames, Vimy Ridge and a widespread mutiny amongst French forces, while America declared war. The video concludes with the offensive at Ypres in 1917.

  1917 saw the Russian Revolution and the collapse of opposition to the Germans in the East. This volume also looks Westward to the trenchlines of 1917 and the work of the war artists, war poets, propagandists and journalists.
